For 2009, we built on the ideas and techniques developed during last year, to create an even more eco-conscious project.
Making real art from something as accessible and as ordinary as a plastic bag gives children and young people an opportunity not just to learn about the importance and impact of recycling. It is also an opportunity to spread a message about its importance for our global environment. Last year, we discovered how energising that can be. Even Banksy, it seemed, backed our timely theme: just CLICK HERE for proof.
Collecting thousands of bags to recycle into our art also engaged an unusually broad community: not just via the families and carers of those involved, but also through the many local shops and businesses who support us. The opportunity to parade our beautiful results in two of London’s most highly-visible, international festivals, as always, raised the self-esteem of all those who play a part.
Participants shared more than just the annual lessons and delights of Carnival teamwork. They also had the experience of working towards a clear environmental goal. We achieved an all-time record of 450 people joining up and becoming newly empowered...not just as young artists, but also eco-activists.
